DAF China's First Prize Winner, Fur Free Alliance's Grand Prize Winner, and, People's Choice Award winner, Feng Chen, with his winning poster.

Feng Chen, from Beijing China, after placing first in the DAF China Regional Contest, has won both of Design Against Fur's international prizes. Fur Free Alliance members chose Feng's poster to win the Grand Prize ($2,500 US). And, the public voted on-line for Feng to win the People's Choice Award ($1,000 US). This is the very first time one student has won a total of three prizes.

Last October, Feng celebrated his first prize regional win in Switzerland - please see photos here.

In March 2009, Swiss Animal Protection (the sponsor of China regional contest) will present Feng with his prizes at the opening of DAF China's anti-fur themed poster exhibit. It will be held in Beijing's 798 Art Area and a special honored guest will be part of the opening event.

Feng Chen is congratulated by DAF China's Chen Qian and Zhang Yang at an October press conference and celebration in Zurich, Switzerland.

Feng is a sophomore of Arts School at Beijing's Renmin University of China. At the Zurich media conference, Feng said that fashion and beauty should be simple and immanent, but nothing with luxury and vanity. He told the journalists he didn't want his anti-fur poster to be bloody and cruel, but he wanted both kids and adults to know the truth about fur fashion, so he chose a thoughtful scene, that could lead people to think more about the background of what had happened to make the fur collar and coat. See his speech below.

Feng Chen's success has increased public awareness about fur in China. As the biggest locality of fur producing, Chinese people needs more information about the truth about fur production. The Design Against Fur contest is not only a campaign for university students, it is already a channel for people to understand why there is a world-wide movement to end the fur trade.

Statement made by Feng Chen, in Zurich, Switzerland at an October 2008 press conference and celebration of his first place win in DAF China's Regional Contest .

“Ladies and gentlemen,

I'm very glad that I have received this award, and I'm very glad that the judges and teachers liked my poster, thank you. I also want to say thank you to my teacher, Mr. Cong, who is a good teacher.

I'm not a fashion man, but I know that real beauty cannot be based on animal pain. Real beauty is simple and inside -not extravagant and involving cruelty to animals...

For me, as a student, there are many adventures and challenges in the future as a designer.

This award is a fantastic start for me. It also means a new future for me. A future designing for worthwhile causes.”
