Design Against Fur 2008 International Poster Contest: North American Student Winners, Professors and Judges Announced
Washington, D.C. (June 11, 2008)—This year, more than 7,000 college students from around the world united in one cause—to design a poster to stop people buying or wearing fur. The Design Against Fur international poster contest nourishes and promotes creative and compassionate expression to get our message across that fur is cruel and unnecessary. The Humane Society of the United States is the North American Regional Host of the Fur Free Alliance's DAF contest. Winners were recently celebrated at NYC's Candle 79 restaurant. More than four hundred college students participated in the North America Regional contest this year.
Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS states, "The students and professors participating in the Design Against Fur poster design contest are using their talents and energy to show us a new pathway. We can do better than to kill animals for their fur, and I send hearty congratulations to the fantastic and creative participants."
Krista Wasson, from the American Intercontinental University, whose student Andrea Inostroza won an Honorable Mention, thanked us for, "…continuing this unique opportunity for my fashion students to showcase their work and their passion in fighting the unnecessary cruelty against animals for fashion."
Tony DiSpigna, our first place winner's professor at the Pratt Institute celebrates the contest saying, "The DAF contest is one of the worthiest of causes. My students and I consider it quite a challenge to come up with original ideas. Since its inception, my students have been honored every year to have been included as part of the final selections. Either I'm extremely lucky or I must be doing something right."
Christina Chong, our First Place Winner from the Pratt Institute told us that, "I really wanted to focus on fur trim as it is accessible to the general public. I was hoping to get people to think about how even a little bit of fur is too much and unnecessary and cruel. All those bits and pieces add up and are not harmless but help fuel the fur trade."
Bekah Wertz, our Second Place Winner from Missouri State University, said that, "the purpose of this poster was to quickly and effectively communicate to its fur-consuming audience the consequences buying one fur coat has on multiple living creatures. People will stop and think about the number of lives they are putting at stake when opting for a real fur product."
Elyse Bryan was our Third Place Winner is from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University.
Daniel Smith, the Todd Oldham Award Winner for Creativity, from the College of Saint Rose let us know that, "I hope the comedic value of this poster will get this serious message about the cruelty associated with wearing fur across to many people. This contest was an amazing opportunity for students to convey the message about the cruelty to animals involved in the fur industry."
Amanda Lasser, from the Pratt Institute, and the winner of the David Carson Award for Original Design Approach, told us that, "I've always believed in animal rights and have been against animal cruelty, so I really felt passionate about this project. As designers, it's our job to find new and creative ways to solve existing problems. At first I struggled with finding a new way to convey the message that wearing fur is immoral. I wanted to stay away from what had already been done in the past, by not showing animals or blood. My solution to the problem was by using words."
Ainslie Willock, international director of DAF, states, "Our fashion desires are driven by the fashion media. With the interconnectivity of today's internet world messages spread instantly. It's good design that can effectively use the same medium to communicate our message of compassion towards animals. I know it will be a better world for the animals because I've met the DAF winners - the world's future communication leaders. Tomorrow's consumers won't buy a fashion product that involves killing an animal for its fur."
