Press release Jun 30, 2009
The Danish Parliament has today (29th May 2009) adopted a ban on the breeding of foxes.
Therefore, animal association Anima contacted both HRH Crown Princess Mary and Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, both on several occasions have worn fox
fur.
Anima is asking the royal family to honor the spirit of the law and not support an industry which Denmark's elected officials have deemed unethical.
Foxes are kept in cages on farms of less than 1 m2 for their fur. Despite over 70 years of breeding of foxes are animals are not tame and experiencing fear, stress and stereotyping when reared under conditions that are normal in the industry. Foxes are killed with electricity that runs from their
snout and rectum, which causes a heart attack killing the animals.
"It is clear that the royal family has a special responsibility not to support cruelty to animals.
Fox farms have been banned because the people's representatives have decided that fur production is unethical and the
animals suffer" says Anima's President Tanja Trine Jørgensen, continuing:
"Many look up to the royal family and therefore we ask in a letter that both
HRH Crown Princess Mary and Her Majesty Queen Margrete help the animals and
never wear fur. Their old fox furs could be donated to rehabilitate orphaned
fox cubs in Animal Shelters."
